Los Angeles, 2050. The city is fractured into encampments and walled-off districts — among them, Halcyon. Thirteen-year-old Lukas, haunted by his father’s disappearance, makes a fateful mistake on his way home from school: he helps a homeless man who has slipped past Halcyon’s vigilant immigration force, HAIPE. The stranger delivers a cryptic warning: Darkness is coming for you. For all of humanity. Moments later, HAIPE arrests him, leaving Lukas with a sinking certainty that the man is right.

Elsewhere, Ellie is visited by her father’s ghost, warning her to keep away from a black pond that has appeared in Halcyon’s woodlands. Strange things continue to unfold: during a mass blackout, the Northern Lights slither like serpents across the night sky. By day, the sun appears to dim and wither. By night, animals start calling Ellie to the woods.
